This morning BattleFrog Racing Series announced that effective immediately all future races in 2016 and 2017 have been cancelled. Yes, you read that correctly. A very popular OCR is stuck in the mud with no signs of climbing out. This is very unfortunate news for many.
Today, all former, current and future BattleFrog racers received an email with the jaw dropping news. Some people were in disbelief and upset, but others had a feeling this type of news was coming. Below is the email we all received:
Dear Jeff :
Thank you for being a valued customer. Today, BattleFrog announced that it will be suspending its 2016 racing season as it focuses its efforts on product alignment and its popular media programming. As a result, all races have been cancelled.
All registrations are being fully refunded to the purchasing credit card. For those with multi-race passes, all unused races will be fully refunded. Refunds will be issued within thirty days by our third party processor.
We regret any inconvenience that this may cause our valued customers. Again, all registrations for cancelled races will be refunded automatically within thirty days and no further action is required. Please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
The only good that came from this was their willingness to refund everyone’s money. Past races that have cancelled their events haven’t always offered full refunds. While it’s awful that this race won’t be around it’s nice to know they cared enough to not take everyone’s money as well.
Also let’s not forget all the employees who lost their jobs because of this too. It’s easy to forget about the people that made this series one of the most popular races in the industry. Hopefully they are able to find other opportunities with other OCR’s.
It’s still unknown the exact reason why BattleFrog decided to cancel their events now instead of waiting until the end of the season. ObstacleRacingMedia highlighted their low attendance at races this past year as a possibility. They’ve also invested a lot of money with their TV show and sponsoring a college football bowl game. If their attendance didn’t increase because of that then they might have run into some financial issues. It sounds like they want to focus more on their TV deal with ESPN than traveling all over the country for a one day weekend race. There is probably way more money to be made that way.
I am surprised that BattleFrog won’t be around next year, but I’m not disappointed. Their 2016 Tri-State I race was a huge letdown for me after an awesome race in 2015. I think I’m in the minority with that feeling, but I wasn’t overly impressed with their obstacles. I’m not scheduled for any BattleFrog’s in 2017 and wasn’t sure if I was going to add one. My decision just got a lot easier.
As more details emerge in the the next days or weeks I’ll be sure to keep you informed. If you’re looking for a race to fill the void there are lots of options out there for October races. Goliathon, Tough Mudder and Savage Race just to name a few.
