Pre-Race Report: Rugged Maniac 6/11

posted in: Pre-Race Reports | 0

When I first started making my plans for the 2016 race season I made sure to include Rugged Maniac. Out of all the races I registered for this is the one I’m most excited about. It’s a 3 mile course with at least 25 obstacles. No other race even comes close to offering as many obstacles for a three-mile course. That means less running for me. The only downside to more obstacles on a smaller course is the potential for lines at obstacles. I’m hoping not to run into this issue, but I’ll soon find out. Per the website there wave times only allow 300 people so that could help keep the lines short or nonexistent. The Rugged Maniac is the cheapest OCR out there too. The price listed on the website is the price you pay. No hidden, insurance or processing fees. This is nice because other OCR’s advertise a low price, but after all the fees are added it ends up being a lot higher. So I’m getting more obstacles for less money. This should be great.

In case you didn’t know a few years ago the founders of Rugged Maniac were on Shark Tank. Their presentation resulted in them receiving an investment opportunity from Mark Cuban. Since then Rugged Maniac has gone on to grow in total revenue and increase their number of events per year. Rugged Maniac is soaring high right now and I’m happy to be a part of it.

Again, I’ll be alone for this race. After doing MuckFest alone last week I don’t mind completing these smaller races by myself. They are a lot more fun with a team, but with the amount of races I’m attempting this year I can’t ask everyone else to go to all these events. I think next year I’ll be completing all the three-mile courses alone and ask the team to join for the bigger events. Since Rugged Maniac is only three miles I’ll need the exact same gear as last week. If you missed my MuckFest Pre-Race Report the list is below:

Photo ID (wallet)

Confirmation Email (saved on my phone)

Running Shoes

Running Clothes (shirt, compression shorts, compression pants)

Flip Flops (for the after race showers)

Towel

Change of Clothes & Shoes

Backpack

Race Socks

Arm Sleeves (from Sleefs)

Plastic Bags for muddy clothes and shoes

My goal for this race is 100% obstacle completion. Coming off of MuckFest last week I want this streak to continue. With 25 obstacles, this could be challenging, but I’m looking forward to testing myself. My target time is under an hour, but I’m not sure if I’ll hit lines or not. If there are no lines it should be achievable.

Weather Report: 85 degrees and cloudy with isolated thunderstorms later in the day. I should be home well before the storms arrive. It’s not the greatest forecast, but it’s a lot better than all the previous races.

In the next mile I’ll share my race experience on Rugged Maniac. It should be a great time!
