Pre-Race Report: MuckFest MS 6/5

Ah, it’s about time a new race hits the schedule. MuckFest MS is coming to town and I’m excited to try this race for the first time. This will be a fun race too. There isn’t a course map, but I can tell you it’s three miles, a lot of obstacles and even more mud. What’s the best part? I get to run for a great cause. To date MuckFest MS has raised over $23 million dollars towards MS research. It’s an awesome feeling knowing that being involved in this event has great significance. I’m looking forward to this race and all the hype around it. MuckFest MS isn’t a major player in the OCR world, but all their reviews are favorable and come highly recommended from amateurs to elites.

For this race I’ll be running alone. Everyone from The Running Dead decided to go to Florida this weekend and leave me behind. This race looks like it will be a lot of fun with a team, but I still think I’ll enjoy it. I won’t be completely alone though. Eve (girlfriend) is coming to this race with me to take some action and beauty shots. I should have some awesome pictures to share with you soon.

Since this race is only three miles I’ll need the bare minimum with me on race day. No hydration pack, snacks, gatorade, warming blanket (finally) or rain poncho. Below is everything I will need.

  • Photo ID (wallet)
  • Confirmation Email (saved on my phone)
  • Running Shoes
  • Running Clothes (shirt, compression shorts, compression pants)
  • Flip Flops (for the after race showers)
  • Towel
  • Change of Clothes & Shoes
  • Backpack
  • Race Socks
  • Arm Sleeves (from Sleefs)
  • Plastic Bags for muddy clothes and shoes

My sole goal for this race is to have fun. I want to have the best time possible. I’ll be with people of all different skill levels so hopefully I’ll get to help a lot of people out and vice versa. I really enjoy doing these races for fun. Sometimes I get caught up in the moment of being too competitive and need to remind myself that these races are all for fun. This is a hobby, not a career.

Weather Report: 79 degrees with 100% chance of thunderstorms. I just wish for once the weather would be nice for a race. The worst part about this is that they are calling for severe weather on Sunday. Severe weather = no race. Hopefully the severe weather holds off after everyone is finished for the day.

I forgot to mention that I’ll be in the 1:40 wave for this race. It’s possibly the latest I’ve started a race. MuckFest MS doesn’t let you choose a wave time. All wave times are assigned at random. Also I race on Sunday for this one instead of Saturday. I’m not a fan of Sunday racing, but Saturday was all sold out when I signed up. It could mean less lines though.

This race is going to be a lot of fun. If all goes well it could be a regular race I add to my schedule in 2017. In the next mile I’ll share my Event Day Experience, unless i get zapped by a lightning bolt.
